Tenerife, the largest of the Canary Islands, is one of the most popular holiday destinations in Europe. Located off the coast of North Africa it enjoys a dry, sunny climate and temperatures that rarely dip below the mid 20s.
Tenerife is dominated by the towering El Teide volcano in the centre of the island, which slopes steeply down to the coast, where beaches range from pale yellow to dramatic black sand.
The El Teide National Park is a must for all visitors and offers outstanding views, rugged scenery, lots walking trails and more, whilst authentic local culture and colour is found in the main towns – the capital, Santa Cruz, hosts one of the largest pre-Lent carnivals in the world, and the attractive San Cristobal de la Laguna is a World Heritage City – and the smaller mountain villages.
The majority of resorts are strung along the south coast, and offer everything one would want on a warm-weather holiday: beaches, water sports, restaurants, golf courses, shopping malls and some of the best theme parks in Europe.
