Once known as the White Town by the Sea, Heiligendamm is the oldest seaside spa town in Europe. Now privately owned and fully modernised, the Grand Hotel Heiligendamm occupies several of the iconic white mansions that line the shore, and welcomes families and couples from around the world into its magical ambience.

Far removed from the bustle of city life, it sits on the edge of the Baltic Sea and is surrounded by forests – the perfect place to relax, reconnect and indulge in land, sea and wellness-focused activities.

Sumptuous rooms and suites with views of the sea or parkland are spread across various buildings and offer modern comforts combined with timeless elegance.

The culinary offerings are superb with three restaurants serving everything from Asian fare and regional specialties to masterful Michelin-star creations. Nelson’s Bar serves more casual fare , ideal for parents with small children and in summer barbecues are held on the beach. For babies, the hotel offers a complimentary “Baby Porridge Menu” freshly prepared every day with a wide range of fruit and vegetables.

Embracing the resort’s wellness history and taking it to the next level, the Severin Palais houses a 3000 square metre spa with a large pool, steam rooms, saunas, hamam and an extensive range of health and beauty treatments.

Parents can enjoy high culture by the sea, with regular concerts, history talks and readings by high profile authors, whilst for children aged 3 and above there is an entire villa dedicated to their entertainment, supervised by very caring and trained staff. They can run freely and play on the swings and sandpits in the private garden and enjoy three themed floors indoors. A programme of original and unique camps and workshops ensure children never have a bored moment.

Toddlers (age 3 and under) can also spend time at the villa in company of their care giver or the hotel can arrange babysitters if required.

Lunch and dinner are served daily at the villa for the young crowd, with food allergies and intolerances catered for.

The Area

Founded in 1793, Heiligendamm was Europe’s first seaside spa town. The therapeutic effects of breathing the sea air and bathing in saltwater were known long ago and European aristocrats would come here to soothe their ailments, resting up in the sparkling white mansions that were built along the beach. Now transformed into a luxury hotel, guests stay in the same mansions, and enjoy the same pristine natural surroundings.

Located well away from any motorways or large towns, one drives through flower-filled meadows and tree-lined avenues to reach Heiligendamm. Once there, one is surrounded by beach forests on three sides, with a fine sandy beach and sea on the fourth. It’s all about immersing oneself in nature in Heiligendamm: the area offers plenty of walks and bike rides, and the narrow gauge steam driven train that connects the resort with neighbouring Bad Doberan and Kühlungsborn offers a very scenic view of the area.
