This beautiful, boutique hotel is located in the mountainous area of Bad Gastein in Salzburger Land, surrounded by breathtaking views both in winter and in summer. With just 33 rooms in total, the hotel has a laid-back and homely feel. The hotel itself is very hip and stylish, with a mix of both the modern and the classic that incorporates tradition and adds those little extras to make guests feel really comfortable. Almost every room has a balcony with valley or mountain views. The spacious living areas double-up as sleeping areas, with cots provided and nanny services available.

The restaurant food is all locally sourced and organic, offering a late breakfast, light lunch till five o’clock, and a gourmet dinner in the evening. The spa is small but offers a wide range of treatments, there are swimming classes available for kids in the indoor pool, and yoga classes are available for every skill level, even for kids! The hotel is very welcoming to families with activities for every age group.

Children’s entertainment includes a mini-kindergarden for the little ones (aged between 1,5 and 3 years), a Kids Club for children from 3 to 12 years, and a space for teenagers with guided programmes as well. The mini-kinergarden  has an additional cost of 8€/hour.

The ski slopes are nearby with a shuttle service available. This really is one of Austria’s finest rural hideaways.

"Erst einmal nochmals Tausend Dank für den tollen Tip. Wir haben einen super Urlaub gehabt. Obwohl wir absolute Strandfans sind wollten meine Tochter Noa (5) und ich den Sommer mal in den Bergen verbringen, wussten aber nicht wohin. Da habe ich mich mal wieder an Ilonka gewendet. Sie hat mich wieder einmal super gut beraten. "Ihr müsst mal das Austrian Design Hotel probieren." Ich kann nur sagen: ein absoluter Volltreffer für uns. Sowohl meine Tochter wie auch ich hatten den perfekten Urlaub. Die Lage, die Einrichtungen, der Service, das Essen, alles war unschlagbar. 

Das Hotel bietet die Möglichkeit viele Aktivitäten zusammen mit den Kindern zu machen, kannst aber auch viel Zeit für dich selbst haben während dein Kind sich im Kids Club wie verrückt amüsiert. Der Kids Club ist unglaublich toll. Die Erzieherinnen sind engagierte, liebevolle, zuvorkommende Menschen die einen super Job mit den Kindern machen. 

Ein Beispiel: ich habe an den täglichen Yoga Stunden teilgenommen, mich im Spa entspannt .... und habe aber auch vieles mit Noa erlebt - tolle Wanderungen gemacht, bei vielen spannenden Aktivitäten (die das Hotel organisiert) mitgemacht. Wir sind sehr begeistert wiedergekommen und wollen auf jeden Fall auch mal im Winter dort hinfahren.

Wes and his family stayed at the Austrian Design Hotel in May 2022: "We stayed at The Austrian Design Hotel at the beginning of June this year and it was absolutely fantastic. We have two young kids (both under 6) and they loved it, the kids club, the swimming pool and all the activities. The food is amazing and is flexible they even encourage you to make a sandwich at breakfast to take out for a mid morning snack when you're out and about. The mountains are incredible too and last but not least Ilonka helped me MASSIVELY with this holiday, we will book through her again for sure."

The Kids Club is held in a bright, big, beautiful space with lovely play corners, and interconnecting rooms that have a swing set and a football table. The facilitators are superb, and the kids can participate in a number of fun activities. There’s everything from arts and crafts, to Kids Yoga classes, to Pony rides in the snow, to meeting Heidi on the farm and baking bread, to visiting the alpacas. The classes are divided into 1.5-3 years and 3-14 years. The kids can have an earlier dinner with the Kids Club every day.

The Mini-Kindergarten is available daily for minis from approx. 18 months to 3 years from 9.30 am till 3 pm. It’s 8€ per hour and that includes a supervised lunch. (The hotel asks you to announce your times before arrival!)

Teenagers have their own room at the property, where they can hang out, listen to music, play table-football and billiards, or just chill out. There are also many things to discover for teenagers (some have a fee.); freeride and freestyle training in winter, wakeboarding in Drautal, rafting, climbing, outdoor guiding, riding, fly fishing, guided mountain bike tours, volleyball matches, and much more!

In the summer the kids can explore nature, animals and all the herbs. You can also take a Kids Yoga class, and The Kids Club hosts wonderful bonfires in the evenings.

There are swimming classes available for kids at the indoor pool, and every day at 16.30 they can join in for Splash Time! (The hotel asks that you attend Splash Time if your child can’t swim.)

In winter kids can take part in many winter sports like pony riding in the snow or skiing. Children above 4 are picked up from the hotel and brought to the ski slopes nearby to join the ski school.

At the hotel, they have amazing spa facilities where parents can take a moment to relax and unwind, together with a panoramic indoor pool, sauna and steam bath, and Kneipp hydrotherapy.

Excursions

The hotel organizes daily tours to the Gastein museum, a guided walk around the town a distillery visit, and a visit to the Gasteiner to learn about the thermal springs. For those who want to venture out in summer, they can take a visit to the first market, go for a star and movie walk, or watch some music bands at Bad Gastein waterfall. You can enjoy some live music at the Miramonte Bar or the SawMill, with nightly excursions organized by the hotel.

On the slopes

There are daily ski tours available for the adults along with evening opening times. You can enjoy a Summit Breakfast on the slopes. Various activities are organized like a Biathlon for everyone, a Ski Race and a Cross Country Course. For the more adventurous there is also Winter Paragliding. The host cultural events like Art on Snow and they also have a Horse and Sleigh ride available during the winter season.

The Area

The spa town of Bad Gastein can be found in the mountainous region of Salzburger Land. In the 19th century, Bad Gastein was a popular holiday resort for European monarchs, and many other notable famous figures like Einstein, Shubert, and Klimt have all enjoyed this little gem hidden away in the mountains. In the last few years, the town has enjoyed somewhat of a revival of tourism, and the town finds itself once again a hip place for artists to come and disconnect.

There is any number of snow activities to enjoy, along with the local thermal spas to explore. But this holiday-town isn’t just for winter, you can really enjoy it in the summer months too. Famous for its giant waterfalls and healing hot springs, there really is something to enjoy in Bad Gastein 365 days of the year. With a strong culture of music and the arts, Bad Gastein really is a holiday for the body and soul. If it’s good enough for the Empress of Austria, it’s good enough for us!
