The French Gîtes are run by a friendly family from the UK who have lived in the region for many years, and are very knowledgeable about the area. They can help book tours nearby, and have great tips about local foods and wines to try.

The cottages are surrounded by several acres of beautiful countryside. The 20m gated pool (chlorine, unheated) stretches to the horizon and is perfect for families. Kids can also make friends with other guests their age and take advantage of the play area, which has a trampoline, ping-pong table, swings, and a football field. Animal lovers will enjoy meeting the chickens, nearby sheep, and friendly cats.

Guests can order a delicious breakfast that includes fresh bread, Colombian coffee, organic juices, and viennoiseries like pain au chocolat and croissants. On Friday and Saturday nights in the summer, the hosts organise pizza dinners in the Barn Bar. The pizzas are cooked in the outdoor clay oven, and many of the ingredients come directly from nearby farms.

Our Reviews

Claire S. stayed at The French Gites in August 2019 with her family: "We recently stayed in The French Gites in the South of France, booked through The Little Voyager. The service was flawless and the stay was just idyllic, perfect for young families and really cost effective too. We'll definitely be using them again, thank you Ilonka and team for a beautiful, stress free holiday. Claire"

Sarah T. stayed at The French Gites  in September 2019 with her family: "We stayed at The French Gites for 6 nights in September 2019 and loved our stay! As a family with 2 young children, we prefer self catering holidays primarily so that we can feed the kids what they want, when they want it (!) without the formality of a hotel dining room. We’ve also learned that some outside space is key, so that we can relax with a drink in the evening whilst the kids are in bed, rather than all sharing one hotel room and sitting in the dark being careful not to wake sleeping children! Ilonka at The Little Voyager perfectly understood our requirements and The French Gites surpassed all expectations. We stayed in Jasmin, the larger cottage. The property is charming, comfortable and stylish. Plenty of space for our family. We loved exploring the garden and barns. The pool and barn bar were great! Our 4 year old had great fun fetching the croissants each morning and feeding the chickens! We flew from London to Toulouse and hired a car. We spent a few days chilling by the pool and enjoyed day trips to Carcassonne and the beach at Leucate, as well as lunches out in Mirepoix and Limoux."

Arne H. stayed at The French Gites  in July 2020 with his family: "We spent a wonderful week at the French Gîtes with our 2 children. Cottage 3 was perfect for us: charming, cosy and equipped with with everything we needed. The property is beautifully renovated and very well taken care of. We really enjoyed the laid back atmosphere and meeting the other lovely families staying there at the same time. The pool was a fresh reward after a day of sightseeing in the sun. And the pizzas on our last evening were not only delicious, but a lovely way to say goodbye. There is so much to see and do in the area, for both adults and children! Thank you, Tilly, for being such a great host and Ilonka for recommending the property to us. We hope to be back some day!"

Bengu stayed at The French Gites with her family in August 2020: "Just back from a very relaxing vacation at South France. For the first time we tried two of the locations recommended by The Little Voyager - The French Gites and The French Hamlet. We enjoyed both places - cannot even choose which one is better :-)! My kids (7 and 9) felt very much at home and enjoyed the freedom at the premises. Great hosts, great locations. And Ilonka definitely makes a difference with her customer service. Thank you so much!"

Tieneke P. stayed at The French Gites in September 2020 with her family: "Thank you Ilonka for a wonderful stay this year at the French Gites! We and our three little girls have had a very pleasant time this September in the south of France - with lots of croissants,  swimming and sunshine and of course Tilly’s unforgettable pizza night!"

Chris G. stayed at The French Gites in May 2022 with his family: "Just a note to let you know we loved the experience at the Gites. We will be back on Little Voyager for our next family holiday."

Charlotte D. stayed at The French Gites in June 2022 with her family: "Ilonka at The Little Voyager has been so helpful assisting us through the pandemic and the issues that arose with cancelled flights and Covid restrictions.
Thankfully we were finally able to go on our family holiday this year! We had the most delightful stay at the French Gites with our children age 3 & 5. The owners are exemplary hosts and nothing was too much trouble. They went above and beyond to make our stay special. As parents, we appreciated the toys and books in the gite while we prepared meals, etc. We enjoyed days out to Carcassonne, markets in Limoux, swimming at the lake in Puivert, and Mirepoix. All within a very short driving distance away which is ideal with small children. We would 100% recommend The L.V and look forward to booking our next trip away."

The French Gites offers guests lots of outdoor options to enjoy the gorgeous natural surroundings. From private terraces attached to each of the cottages to a lovely garden area to nearby vineyards, forests and fig trees, there’s plenty of ways to breathe the fresh air right on the property.

FURTHER AFIELD

The Village of Mirepoix

Mirepoix town in FranceMirepoix is a picturesque nearby village. Try visiting the traditional market on Monday mornings, walk around the gothic-style Saint Maurice cathedral, or grab a pastry and stop at one of the cafes on the main square to people watch.

Cathar Castles

Visit Montsegur or one of the other nearby Cathar castles and learn more about the lives of the medieval heretics who helped shape southern France. Today the castles are beautiful ruins set in precipitous locations. Make sure to avoid visiting during the hottest hours of the day, and plan for around 1.5 hours of walking.

Wine Tasting

The French Gites and Wine Tasting with The Little Voyager

The Atelier de Vignerons wine shop in Limoux is a good place to ask for recommendations. Several local vineyards offer tastings, and it’s also possible to visit the wine caves at the Domaine Gayda or in Sieur D’Arques. A charming vineyard to visit is Colline de L'hirondelle (owned by a lovely French-American couple), where they produce organic wine which can be tasted on site. The hosts can also give you more information on wine tastings and help you book them.

The Area

The Aude region of the Languedoc offers an altogether more tranquil and authentic version of southern France than one finds at the seaside resorts. Here, medieval castles perch on rocky crags and rivers meander gently through lush valleys.

Undulating vines and farmland surround sleepy villages, where family bakeries turn out fabulous breads and afternoon activities may be limited to a game of boules under the shade of a plane tree. There are plenty of historic towns and villages – most notably the citadel of Carcassonne – and the pretty Canal du Midi winds its way peacefully through the area.

With rivers, gorges, valleys and lakes, the scenery is spectacularly varied and begs to be discovered, and winery tours are always a popular way to spend a day or two when in the area. The peaks of the Pyrenees – good for skiing in winter, and walking in summer - are an hour away, and the coast is about the same.
