Our Reviews

Bengu stayed at the French Hamlet with her family in August 2020: "Just back from a very relaxing vacation at South France. For the first time we tried two of the locations recommended by The Little Voyager - The French Gites and The French Hamlet. We enjoyed both places - cannot even choose which one is better :-)! My kids (7 and 9) felt very much at home and enjoyed the freedom at the premises. Great hosts, great locations. And Ilonka definitely makes a difference with her customer service. Thank you so much!"

Kids playing in the pool at the French Hamlet

Dilek stayed at the French Hamlet with her family in August 2020: "I’ve never imagined to have one of the most relaxing and fun holidays this summer especially after the pandemic. Four adults and three kids, we spent a week at a place called The French Hamlet which is in South-West France. A true natural beauty with a wide garden, almost private pool, farm animals, playground and very nice environment. Every little detail was taken care of for our comfort from finding breakfast bread at the door to a side by pool that we can barbecue anytime and get some cold drinks. We managed to swim in Mediterrenean in an hour's drive, visit a castle nearby or do a wine-tasting at a very nice chateau. Kids were super happy to be able to play outside free while feeding animals. Highly recommended for families especially with young kids. The service and friendship that Ilonka-The Little Voyager is providing cannot be described good enough only with words. Ilonka responds in a minute and provides great flexibility to make you happy. Great travel experience and we will definetely do it again! :)"

BBQs in the Summer kitchen

The poolside summer kitchen is equipped with a built-in gas barbecue, as well as an outdoor fridge and freezer, and plenty of shade to enjoy a cook out on hot summer days.

Further afield

Hiking and cycling

A safe, off-the-road track runs right from the domain to the village of Mirepoix, and is perfect for hiking and cycling.

The Village of Mirepoix

French Hamlet and Mirepoix with The Little Voyager

With its picturesque, half-timbered medieval houses surrounding the small town square, Mirepoix is perfect for a day outing. Try visiting the traditional market on Monday mornings, walk around the gothic-style Saint Maurice cathedral, or grab a pastry and stop at one of the cafes on the main square to people watch .

Cathar Castles

Visit Montsegur or one of the other nearby Cathar castles and learn more about the lives of the medieval heretics who helped shape southern France. Today the castles are beautiful ruins set in precipitous locations. Make sure to avoid visiting during the hottest hours of the day, and plan for around 1.5 hours of walking .

Wine tastings at local wineries

Many local wineries offer tours and wine tastings. The closest are the Corbières Vineyards just down the road.

The Area

The Aude region of the Languedoc offers an altogether more tranquil and authentic version of southern France than one finds at the seaside resorts. Here, medieval castles perch on rocky crags and rivers meander gently through lush valleys.

Undulating vines and farmland surround sleepy villages, where family bakeries turn out fabulous breads and afternoon activities may be limited to a game of boules under the shade of a plane tree. There are plenty of historic towns and villages – most notably the citadel of Carcassonne – and the pretty Canal du Midi winds its way peacefully through the area.

With rivers, gorges, valleys and lakes, the scenery is spectacularly varied and begs to be discovered, and winery tours are always a popular way to spend a day or two when in the area. The peaks of the Pyrenees – good for skiing in winter, and walking in summer - are an hour away, and the coast is about the same .
