Schleswig-Holstein, Germany

Schleswig-Holstein, Germany

Things to do - general

With coasts on both the Baltic and the North Sea, Schleswig-Holstein is home to Germany’s most elite summer retreats. A peninsula characterised by long sandy beaches, candy-striped lighthouses and fjords carved out by glaciers, but with little urban development, the peace and serenity here makes it an ideal destination for nature lovers and wellness enthusiasts.

Bordering Denmark to the north, there’s more than a little Scandinavian influence here, evident in the dialects and culinary traditions, with excellent seafood to be found.

Away from the coast the landscape is mostly miles of flat, green farmland, dotted with marshes and lakes, ideal for gentle bike rides; cycling alongside the busy Kiel Canal is always popular activity and the historic town of Lübeck with its magnificently preserved Hanseatic League headquarters, is a top cultural attraction.
