Located in a tranquil medieval village in southern France, this family-run bed & breakfast is located in a former master’s house that dates back almost 200 years.

Guests are welcomed like family by the charming hosts, who spent two years restoring the property to its former glory. Interiors are bright and crisp, with warm wooden floors, pastel coloured walls and spacious, modern bathrooms.

Five bedrooms are available, three of which are straightforward doubles with en suite bathrooms. The fourth and fifth rooms make up the family suite, comprising a children’s room with twin beds and an adjoining adult’s room with king size bed and living area. Cots and high chairs are available on request.

Situated a few hundred metres from the centre of the village, the property is surrounded by delightful landscaped gardens that include a playground and have wonderful views to the surrounding mountains. In summer, breakfast and dinner (offered three nights per week) are served outdoors; in winter, the indoor dining room and cosy lounge come into their own.

Our Reviews

Luca Santagostino stayed at the French Rural Retreat with his family in August 2017:

"We had the opportunity to spend a week at the French Rural Retreat thanks to Ilonka. The place and its surrounding is perfect for a week with the kids, quiet at night, with activities during the day at any driving distance, and the hosts of the property are amazingly charming and welcoming. The property is stunning. Ilonka, from The Little Voyager, has been an invaluable resource in helping us. She understood perfectly what we were looking for and suggested us the perfect spot. We trusted her once and we will certainly do so again.

Thanks a lot The Little Voyager for your help! Amazing!"

Elaine Donovan stayed at the French Rural Retreat with her family in June 2017:

"My experience with The Little Voyager, and in particular Ilonka, was nothing short of perfect. My husband and I took our 2 year daughter to The French Rural Retreat for 5 nights. We wanted something kid friendly, no fuss, relaxing and beautiful. It was all of this and more. The family who own and run it are fantastic. They were so welcoming and we really felt at home from the moment we arrived. Our daughter would have gladly staying there all day long, as there was big safe gardens to run around, friendly cats, a fairy house, a playhouse full of toys and most importantly a trampoline! (We now have to get a trampoline!!). The room we were in was gorgeous, really one of the most beautiful rooms we've ever stayed in. If we didn't have a toddler we would have enjoyed sleeping in more!! The village is sleepy, which suited us, but there is a lovely restaurant that we went to twice, once with our daughter and another night on our own as we were able to book one of the family to babysit for a couple of hours. We took a few day trips in to neighbouring Carcassonne and other towns that the family told us about. Everything was very close. We were really looking for somewhere to relax, and somewhere where our daughter could run around, and somewhere where we could sit out in the evening other a glass of wine after her bedtime and no be too far away from her. This ticked all the boxes and more.

Thank you Ilonka, we were certainly be going through you for all of our family breaks in the future."

Eva and her daughter Noa stayed at the French Rural Retreat in July 2018:

Activities for kids

At the property

There’s plenty of entertainment at the B&B for children, in the form of an outdoor playground, with a climbing frame and swings, a little Wendy House and plenty of garden to run around in.

Games, DVDs and WiFi are available indoors.

In the village

It’s a few minutes walk into the centre of the village and the river Aude that runs through it. In the village there is a tennis court, boules pitch and pleasant picnic areas on the banks of the river, which visitors can use.

The public swimming pool, fed by a fresh water spring, is open in summer and includes a large pool with diving boards, a shallow kids pool and a small café.

On the River

The river Aude with its rapids and the Lys and St Georges gorges create ideal conditions for practicing a number of river-based activities. A sports centre in the village offers kayaking and canoeing tours down the river and thrilling white water experiences in large, stable inflatable rafts. Canyoning, which involves a combination of climbing, jumping and sliding through gorges is also offered, as is white water swimming – practiced wearing protective suits and helmets, and aided by fins and floats.

Accro Climbing Park

For children aged 6 and older and adults, this park close to the property is an assault course through the tree tops. There are four courses that include climbing, rope bridges and zip lines across the river.

Walking & Cycling

The winding country roads in the area are good for gentle bike rides and picnics or, for something more adventurous, there are a number of trail bike rides in the nearby hills.

The scenic hills, valleys, lakes and gorges are also ideal for walks of all lengths and fitness levels.

Activities for adults

Wine Tours

During spring and summer your hosts can arrange wine tours that include visits to some of the most unique vineyards in the area, plus a picnic or restaurant lunch, led by an expert in wines of the Languedoc region.

Casino

For a night out on the town, village-style, there is a modern casino on the outskirts of the village with machines and gaming tables, a piano bar and restaurant.

Cultural Tours

Well located for touring Cathar country, there are hundreds of fortified towns, medieval castles and places of historic importance to visit all within less than an hour’s drive. Don’t miss the famous citadel of Carcassonne, the mysterious hilltop village of Rennes les Chateaux which features in a number of conspiracy theories, the mountain top Peyrepertuse castle, and the beautiful town of Limoux.

Golf

The 18-hole Carcassonne Golf course sits at the foot of the historic city and offers superb views over the Pyrenees and very peaceful ambiance. Open year-round.

The Area

The Aude region of the Languedoc offers an altogether more tranquil and authentic version of southern France than one finds at the seaside resorts. Here, medieval castles perch on rocky crags and rivers meander gently through lush valleys.

Undulating vines and farmland surround sleepy villages, where family bakeries turn out fabulous breads and afternoon activities may be limited to a game of boules under the shade of a plane tree.

There are plenty of historic towns and villages – most notably the citadel of Carcassone – and the pretty Canal du Midi winds its way peacefully through the area.

With rivers, gorges, valleys and lakes, the scenery is spectacularly varied and begs to be discovered, and winery tours are always a popular way to spend a day or two when in the area.

The peaks of the Pyrenees – good for skiing in winter, and walking in summer - are an hour away, and the coast is about the same.
The village itself is tiny, with just one restaurant, one snack bar and – oddly – a casino. A spring-fed fresh water pool is open in summer and has a play area and smaller pool for children.
