Improvising when travelling with small children

Improvising when Travelling with Kids with The Little Voyager

Recently I learned again the hard way how important it is to improvise and be patient when travelling with small kids.

We visited Andorra for few days during a Spanish bank holiday and just like everybody else we planned on leaving on the Sunday so we would be back to work and to kindergarten by Monday.

As we could have foreseen we got stuck in a severe traffic jam. My kids first enjoyed the trip but after a while my daughter decided to unbuckle her seatbelt and my son got so bored he started crying. Usually I pack extra snacks and few little new toys and some gadgets I only bring along when we travel but this time my organisation somehow failed and even my attempts playing the backseat clown could not stop the trip from starting to become quite unpleasant. And we had at least another 5 hours trip in front of us…

This whole day could have ended in total disaster but thank god my husband loves to improvise so at one point he suggested to change route and drive back to where we started from few hours before… Once back, we took a break in the countryside so the kids could run around and then …we all enjoyed a nice lunch. What a relief!

After lunch we looked for a suitable place to spend the night. Then we visited Andorra’s capital, got to meet Santa’s reindeers and visited the local Christmas Market. Andorra is full of things to do with kids and especially during Christmas time the town has all kinds of attractions set up just for them.

On the next day we left very early and made it back home after a very smooth and short drive to Barcelona. So I am very glad we decided to change plans and avoid what would have been a complete nightmare for us all!
